TAFKIK

TAFKIK (disassembly) is a journey split in two acts (Act I in 2015 and Act II in 2017) restoring the mystery and complexity of the Chechia (traditional red hat) manifacturing through various encounters. It highlights the poetry and the mysterious, or even mystic, atmosphere maintained around its production. Furthermore, this project raises awareness on a heritage that has been forgotten and on the role of women and men who have contributed to its flourishing over the centuries. It is an aesthetic based on the idea of transmission and transformation…

An active and socially committed human chain is struggling to perpetuate the Chechia, with which Tunisians have been covering their heads for generations. It is, indeed, more than just a men headdress. Haloed by its Andalusian origin, the Chechia is the culmination of precise techniques and stories of crafts. Within a radius of a few tens of kilometres around the capital, Tunis, craftspeople, whose existence is not even suspected, are actively working behind the scenes. This chain of crafts with inseparable links and exceptional know-how, which has been transmitted for generations, is now seriously threatened with extinction.
